Indices surge 1.3% with Sensex going past 60,500 and Nifty 18,000

Indian benchmark indices continued to remain buoyant with the markets gaining more than a per cent on Monday. Sensex and Nifty crossed the psychological barriers of 60,000 and 18,000, respectively, in today’s session.

Sensex ended with a gain of 786 points at 60,749 and Nifty just above 18,000 – at 18,012, a gain of 225 points.

The rally was led by IT, Auto, Pharma, Oil & Gas, Consumer Durable and Financial Services indices with all sectoral indices ending in the green. Metal remained somewhat under pressure in today’s session but still managed to gain.

Among stocks that gained the most today, Ultratech Cement, M&M, HDFC and Eicher Motors were among the top performers. Apollo Hospitals, Dr Reddy’s, and Tata Steel shed in today’s session.

Indices around the world otherwise had a mixed day. Japan’s Nikkei share average ended at a six-week high on Monday with technology shares leading the charge. The Nikkei index rose 1.78%.

China’s stocks fell to a 3-1/2-year low while Hong Kong shares posted their biggest monthly loss in 14 years, as weak factory activity data and fresh Covid outbreaks compounded China growth fears.

China’s benchmark CSI300 Index fell 0.9% to 3508.7 points, the lowest closing level since February 2019. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.8%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 1.2% to the lowest level since early 2009, the depth of the Global Financial Crisis.

European shares edged lower on Monday led by declines in energy stocks and miners while investors await the key inflation figure in the eurozone which will likely show prices hitting new record highs in October. The STOXX 600 index slipped marginally in the morning session.

Aluminium companies looking at acute margin compression on higher input cost

Despite robust demand, aluminium makers are staring at intense compression in operating margins to the tune of 1,200 basis points to 22-24 per cent this fiscal due to lower realisation and higher production cost, says a report.

However, a Crisil report sees aluminium companies maintaining robust operating profits due to healthy domestic demand.

Operating margin of primary aluminium producers is expected to decline more than 1,200 basis points (bps) this fiscal to 22-24 per cent from a decadal high of 36 per cent last fiscal, due to lower realisations and higher cost of production, mainly power, Crisil said in a report on Monday. (PTI)

Sri Lanka’s key inflation rate slows to 66% in October

Sri Lanka’s key inflation rate slowed to 66% in October after hitting 69.8% in September, the crisis-struck country’s statistics department said on Monday.

The surge in the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) was led by a 85.6% jump in food prices and a 56.3% climb in the non-food group, the Census and Statistics Department said in a statement.

The CCPI, released at the end of each month, acts as a lead indicator for broader national prices and shows how inflation is evolving in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s biggest city, as the country battles its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948. (Reuters)

Prabhudas Lilladher recommendations for IOC and Maruti Suzuki

Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL IN) – Avishek Datta – Research Analyst

Rating: REDUCE | CMP: Rs68 | TP: Rs50

Q2FY23 Result Update – LPG grants support earnings beat

We believe OMCs earnings will be hit by sharp jump in diesel marketing losses (current diesel loss at Rs10/litre) given low inventory, gas to oil switch (led by high spot LNG prices) and drop in Russian exports, despite improvement in refining profitability. We maintain ‘’REDUCE” rating given high crude price volatility with PT of Rs50 (unchanged). Any sharp correction in crude prices will be an upside risk to our estimates.

Maruti Suzuki (MSIL IN) – Mansi Lall – Research Associate, Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt Ltd

Rating: BUY | CMP: Rs9,493 | TP: Rs10,230

Q2FY23 Result Update – Beats estimates; strong order backlog

Considering, strong operational performance in 2Q, we increase our EPS estimates by 8/7% for FY24/25E to factor in (1) margin improvement on the back of Yen depreciation & commodity cost softening and (2) increased realizations to higher exports and UV’s share in the mix. Maintain ‘BUY’ rating with target price of 10,230 at 26x Sep-FY24E EPS.

Saudi, UAE back OPEC cuts as US envoy warns of ‘uncertainty’

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates defended on Monday a decision by OPEC and its allies to cut oil production, even as an American envoy warned of “economic uncertainty” ahead for the world.

While cordial, the comments at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference showed the stark divide between the United States and Gulf Arab countries it supports militarily in the wider Middle East.

Saudi Arabia’s energy minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, hinted at that in brief remarks to the event, noting that upcoming U.N. climate change summits will be held in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

Gold prices today near one-month low. Why yellow metal is under pressure

Gold prices in India today remained near one-month lows as global rates were set for a seventh straight monthly loss. On MCX, gold futures were near 50,200 per 10 gram while silver edged lower to 57,395 per kg. The yellow metal, since rising over 55,000 in March, has been under pressure as US Fed embarked on a rate hike mode to tame inflation.

Investors remained cautious ahead of this week’s Federal Reserve policy meet for guidance on its future stance. Spot gold was flat at $1,643.13 per ounce and down about 1% for the month. Spot silver fell 0.4% to $19.16 per ounce.

In a recent note, domestic brokerage Emkay said: “Despite the fact that we are witnessing high inflation, and economic uncertainties around the globe, gold has been largely trading range-bound. It is widely expected that in the near future gold may remain in narrow ranges. The only factor which gives some potential for strength to gold at this point in time is the occasional talk of gold as a hedge against inflation and uncertainties. But this property of gold as an asset class has been undermined to a large extent as evidenced by the fact that despite inflation has been very high in the US, Europe, and other territories, gold has not picked up.” (Read More)

Japan’s Nikkei ends at 6-week high as tech shares rally

Japan’s Nikkei share average ended at a six-week high on Monday, tracking a strong finish on Wall Street in the previous session, with technology shares leading the charge.

The Nikkei index rose 1.78% to 27,587.46, its highest since Sept. 20, and marked its biggest one-day gain since Oct. 14. The broader Topix index climbed 1.6% to 1,929.43.

A robust, broad-based rally sent Wall Street to a sharply higher close on Friday, as encouraging economic data and sunnier forecasts fuelled investor risk appetite ahead of the Federal Reserve’s much-anticipated policy meeting later this week.

“Japanese shares tracked the robust finish of the U.S. market and they are strong. But we can’t be optimistic,” said Shuji Hosoi, senior strategist at Daiwa Securities. (Reuters)

INDIA BONDS-Bond yields tad higher ahead of central bank meetings

Indian government bond yields were marginally higher in early trades on Monday, with markets awaiting critical cues from global central bank meetings during the week, especially of the United States and India.

The benchmark Indian 10-year government bond yield was at 7.4337% as of 0430 GMT, after closing at 7.4161% on Friday. It fell 10 basis points (bps) last week, having risen an aggregate 35 bps in previous six weeks.

“There are no bullish triggers now and, as we move towards the central bank meetings, we could see some nervousness and position cutting,” a trader with a state-run bank said.

“7.40% should now act as a bottom.”

The Federal Reserve’s policy decision is due on Wednesday, with broad expectations of another 75-bps rate hike, while future guidance and commentary will be key. The Fed has raised rates by 300 bps since March, including three back-to-back 75-bps hikes. (Reuters)

Angel One weekly outlook on Base Metal: We expect copper to trade lower towards 644 levels, a break of which could prompt the price to move lower to 634 levels.

Saish Sandeep Sawant Dessai, research associate- base metals, Angel One Ltd: Metals like lead and aluminum only managed to end higher, as the base metals group continues to see a mixed set of action.

After hopes that the US Federal Reserve might slow the pace of rate increases, the metals did move higher. The gloomy US economic figures this week increased expectations that the Federal Reserve will relax monetary policy, limiting economic harm and boosting commodity demand.

As a result, the dollar eventually fell, making commodities more affordable for holders of other currencies. Gains were however limited as a result of an increase in coronavirus cases in China, which raised questions about the pace of the largest consumer nation’s economic growth.

Additionally, the Yuan dropped to its lowest level against the dollar since 2008, increasing the price of products purchased in dollars by Chinese consumers.

Outlook: We expect copper to trade lower towards 644 levels, a break of which could prompt the price to move lower to 634 levels.

Kotak Securities on Commodities – Gold and Crude

Ravindra V.Rao, CMT, EPAT, VP-head commodity research, Kotak Securities Ltd:

Gold: COMEX Gold traded in a narrow range between $1641.2/oz and $1679/oz in the week gone by and closed with marginal decline cushioned by a softer DXY as most economic data from the US signaled towards a slowing economy, adding to bets that the Fed may slow down the pace of monetary policy tightening after the November meeting. Investment demand has seen a continuous downturn as indicated by the SPDR gold trust holdings. SPDR Gold holdings currently stand at 922.59 tonnes, lowest since March 2020. Focus for the week will be on the US data print along with the all-important FOMC meeting. Traders are betting on a less hawkish fed after the November meeting. If that happens precious metals might recover amid US dollar weakness.

Crude: Crude oil started the previous week on a negative note hurt by decline in business activity in major global economies but robust exports and high refinery activity in the US coupled with weaker DXY reversed declines and helped WTI and Brent Crude close the week with more than 3% and 2% gains respectively. As per Weekly Petroleum Status Report for the week ending Oct. 21, US Crude exports surged to a weekly record of 5.129 million barrels per day, while Refineries operated at a four year high at 88.9% of their operable capacity. Crude oil trade lower today on weaker economic data from China but prices are headed for a monthly gain in October ahead of sizeable output cuts by OPEC

In China, workers flee Covid lockdown at one of world’s biggest iPhone factory

In China, droves of migrant workers have been fleeing back to their hometowns from the country’s largest iPhone factory in Covid-hit Zhengzhou, amidst a lockdown triggered by the Covid outbreak. Apple supplier Foxconn’s COVID-19 woes at its vast iPhone manufacturing facility in China’s Zhengzhou city could slash the site’s November iPhone shipments by up to 30%, Reuters reported.

Rupee may inch up at open on upbeat risk appetite; Fed meet in focus

The Indian rupee is tipped to open slightly higher versus the dollar on Monday, helped by an improved risk sentiment.

The rupee’s advance is, however, likely to be capped by the higher Treasury yields.

The rupee is expected to open at 82.40-82.45, compared with 82.47 in the previous session.

It is likely to be a “holding session” for the rupee, with the currency balancing a “decent” revival in risk and renewed uptick in U.S. yields and the dollar index, a trader at Mumbai-based bank said.

Lula wins Brazil’s bitter presidential vote, Bolsonaro silent

Brazilian president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called for “peace and unity” after narrowly winning a divisive runoff election Sunday, capping a remarkable political comeback by defeating far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro — who has yet to accept defeat.

The victory marks a stunning turnaround for charismatic but tarnished leftist icon Lula, who left office in 2010 as the most popular president in Brazilian history, fell into disgrace when he was imprisoned for 18 months on controversial, since-quashed corruption charges, and now returns for an unprecedented third term at age 77.

All eyes will now be on how Bolsonaro and his supporters react to the result, after months of alleging — without evidence — that Brazil’s electronic voting system is plagued by fraud and that the courts, media and other institutions had conspired against his far-right movement. (AFP)

Dr V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services: “Technically the market is poised to continue the ongoing rally aided by support from the mother market US where the Dow’s 828-point rally last Friday recorded fourth straight week of gains. The driving force behind the ongoing rally is the strength of the US economy which is indicating a lower probability of an immediate US recession and, more importantly, indications that inflation is plateauing and might show a declining trend soon. This might enable the FED to slightly moderate their hawkish stance. Already central banks of Canada and Australia have hiked rates below expectations. If this trend spreads, that will favour continuation of the rally in the short-term. The fact that FPIs have turned buyers during the last 2 days is another positive. However, DIIs might sell at higher levels since valuations are high.”

Wall Street Friday rally marks first weekly win streak since summer

Technology stocks led a broad rally on Wall Street Friday, capping another strong week for the market, as investors welcomed solid profits from Apple and other companies.

The S&P 500 rose 2.5% and posted its first back-to-back weekly gains since August. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2.6% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite climbed 2.9%. Smaller company stocks also gained ground, lifting the Russell 2000 index by 2.3%.

Apple’s latest quarterly results showed the iPhone maker made even fatter profits during the summer than expected. Its shares rose 7.6% and led a rally in technology stocks that had largely been beat up a day earlier.

Intel jumped 10.7% after delivering much bigger profit than analysts forecasted even though it said it saw “worsening economic conditions.”

Investors were also encouraged by a report on consumer spending that came a day after new data showing the economy grew modestly in the third quarter and inflation eased.

“You have an economy that almost refuses to keel over, an economy that at its core is resilient, but a the same time inflation is easing and that is what the Fed wants and that’s obviously what the market wants,” said Quincy Krosby, chief equity strategist for LPL Financial.

That’s helped fuel hopes on Wall Street for a “pivot” by the Federal Reserve, where the central bank dials down the big interest-rate hikes that have shaken the market. Such a move could boost the market, though many analysts say such hopes may be overdone. (AP)
